NextEra Energy targets AI power needs with 35 GW project backlog

AI’s insatiable appetite for electricity has created a new kind of gold rush, and NextEra Energy is positioning itself as the company selling shovels. The utility giant reported a backlog of 35.1 GW in renewable energy and storage projects as of Q2 2026, fueled in large part by hyperscale computing clients who need power at a scale that didn’t exist a few years ago. To put 35 gigawatts in perspective, that’s roughly enough to power 26 million homes. NextEra isn’t just building wind farms for the grid anymore. It’s building the energy infrastructure that will keep the AI boom from hitting a very literal wall: the power outlet. Data center hubs become the main event NextEra Energy Resources, the company’s competitive energy arm, has launched what it calls a “data center hub” initiative. The base-case target is at least 15 GW of new generation capacity dedicated to these hubs by 2035. The upside case more than doubles that to over 30 GW. Management says it’s currently in discussions around 30 potential hub locations, with plans to expand that pipeline to 40 by the end of 2026.
