South Korea’s National Pension Service just handed one of the most consequential jobs in global finance to Kyuhong Lee. Effective September 15, the veteran investment executive will take the helm of a portfolio worth roughly ₩1,866 trillion, or about $1.4 trillion, making it one of the largest public pension funds on the planet. Who is Kyuhong Lee Lee’s resume reads like a greatest-hits tour of Korean institutional asset management. He served as CIO of the Teachers’ Pension from 2019 to 2023, overseeing that fund’s investment strategy across a particularly volatile stretch that included the pandemic-era whipsaw and the subsequent rate-hiking cycle. Before that, he spent five years as CIO at NH-Amundi Asset Management from 2013 to 2018, a joint venture between South Korea’s NongHyup Financial Group and the European asset management giant Amundi. He also held leadership roles at Ascendas Asset Management Korea and Eastspring Investments Korea, giving him deep exposure to both alternative and traditional asset classes across private and public sectors.
