Microsoft provides DARPA access to quantum system at new Maryland center

Microsoft just opened the doors of a new quantum research center in Maryland and handed the keys to DARPA. The 15,000-square-foot facility, located in the University of Maryland’s Discovery District, will give defense researchers something they’ve never had before: physical, hands-on access to Microsoft’s quantum hardware, specifically its Majorana 2 chip. Until now, DARPA’s evaluations of Microsoft’s quantum systems happened remotely, conducted from the company’s headquarters in Redmond or from facilities in Europe. The new center changes the dynamic entirely, letting DARPA experts run independent tests on the actual machines.
