Microsoft plans to triple data center capacity to over 38 gigawatts by 2032

Microsoft is plotting a data center buildout so massive that its electricity consumption would surpass the peak power draw of an entire US state. The company aims to reach over 38 gigawatts of data center capacity by 2032, roughly tripling its current footprint of approximately 12 GW. To put 38 GW in perspective, that’s more electricity than New York state consumes at peak demand. The AI engine behind the power grab Microsoft’s AI-specific data center capacity currently sits at around 2 GW. By 2032, AI workloads are expected to account for roughly one-third of the company’s total capacity. That means AI alone could consume around 12 to 13 GW, essentially matching the company’s entire current data center footprint. The expansion includes both owned and leased facilities but intentionally excludes rented neocloud capacity. Microsoft has reportedly been turning away AI and cloud computing business because it simply didn’t have enough computing power or energy to fulfill it.
