Michael Burry, the investor who famously bet against the housing market before the 2008 financial crisis, is now turning his forensic accounting lens on Big Tech. His target this time: the footnotes buried deep in SEC filings that he believes paint a misleading picture of how much the AI infrastructure buildout is actually costing companies like Oracle. In a Substack post published on September 19, Burry laid out his case in a piece titled “The Heretic’s Guide to AI’s Stars Part IV: The Big 5 Hyperscalers & the Missing $3 Trillion.” The analysis picks apart the 10-K and 10-Q filings of Amazon, Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Oracle, arguing that these companies’ accounting practices systematically obscure the true scale of their commitments. The Oracle problem Oracle sits at the center of Burry’s critique. The company reported fiscal Q1 2027 earnings on September 10, posting cloud infrastructure revenue of $7.39 billion.
