Meta says Muse was built from scratch but admits OpenClaw inspiration

When your homework looks suspiciously similar to someone else’s, the best move is usually to get ahead of the story. That’s essentially what Meta just did. Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs, confirmed that Muse, the company’s personal AI agent that racked up over 900,000 downloads in its first week, was “heavily inspired” by OpenClaw, an open-source, self-hosted agent framework. The similarities extend to workspace file structures and agent architectures. Meta maintains, however, that no code was directly copied and that Muse was built from the ground up. From open-source blueprint to billion-dollar product OpenClaw first surfaced around January 2026 as a locally-run, multi-channel AI agent. It gained rapid traction, including significant adoption among developers in China, positioning itself as a grassroots alternative to the cloud-first approaches favored by Big Tech.
