Meta mulls allowing AI-run accounts on Facebook, raising questions about platform authenticity

Meta appears to be weighing whether to let AI-powered accounts operate on Facebook, a move that would fundamentally alter the social contract between the platform and its roughly three billion users. The company’s head of operations has reportedly discussed the possibility, though no formal policy has been announced. The company has integrated AI assistants into its apps since at least 2023, with significant expansions throughout 2024 that brought generative AI tools to Instagram and Facebook. But there’s a meaningful gap between AI assistants, which help users draft messages or generate images, and fully autonomous AI accounts that could post content, interact with other users, and effectively masquerade as participants in the social graph.
