Manu Koné wants to talk about the World Cup. Everyone else wants to talk about where he’ll be playing club football next season.
The 25-year-old French central midfielder has publicly stated he’s channeling all his energy toward representing France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with any decisions about his club future to follow afterward. A perfectly reasonable stance, except for the fact that his employer, AS Roma, has already made a decision of its own: placing Koné on the transfer list in May 2026.
Roma’s financial reality meets Koné’s rising stock
Roma listed Koné due to financial pressures, a move that speaks volumes about the Italian club’s current economic position. Koné only arrived in Rome in August 2024 on a five-year deal running through June 2029. Less than two years into that contract, the club has decided his value on the market outweighs his value on the pitch.
His current market valuation sits at around €50 million, which makes him one of Roma’s most liquid assets.
Arsenal have reportedly entered the conversation, with a potential transfer fee discussed in the range of €40-50 million. Inter Milan are also circling.
The World Cup as an audition nobody wants to call an audition
France opens their 2026 World Cup campaign against Senegal on June 16, 2026. Koné, who has earned 14 caps for Les Bleus without finding the back of the net, will be looking to solidify his place in the national team setup alongside the likes of Kylian Mbappé.
What this means for the clubs involved
Arsenal’s interest makes strategic sense. The Premier League club has been methodically building a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts, and a 25-year-old central midfielder with international experience and a contract that doesn’t expire for three more years fits their profile. The fact that Roma are a motivated seller only sweetens the deal for Arsenal’s negotiators.
Inter Milan’s involvement adds a layer of competitive tension that could benefit Roma in negotiations. Arsenal can offer the financial power and global visibility of the Premier League. Inter can offer Champions League pedigree and the comfort of staying in Serie A, a league Koné already knows.
