Manchester United’s Tchouaméni transfer saga highlights the economics of elite football deals

1 hour ago 1

Manchester United wants Aurélien Tchouaméni. Real Madrid hasn’t said yes. And the salary demands are, to put it mildly, ambitious. The Premier League club has reportedly told the French midfielder he would need to accept a higher wage package to make the move happen, while simultaneously failing to secure Madrid’s blessing to even begin formal talks.

The numbers behind the negotiation

Real Madrid reportedly values Tchouaméni at roughly €90 million. The 26-year-old midfielder currently earns an estimated €12.5 million per season gross, which works out to approximately €240,385 per week. Manchester United, according to multiple reports, has indicated the player would need an even higher salary to justify the move to Old Trafford.

That’s a lot of euros for a player Real Madrid doesn’t even want to sell. The Spanish club views Tchouaméni as integral to their squad and has shown no urgency to entertain offers. No formal negotiation request has been received from United, leaving the entire situation in a kind of expensive limbo.

United reportedly considers Tchouaméni a “dream signing” and would be willing to make him one of the club’s highest-paid players. But saying you’ll pay top dollar and actually structuring a deal that works financially are two very different exercises. The club has apparently been reconsidering the economics of their offer as the full cost picture comes into focus.

Tchouaméni’s contract with Real Madrid runs through June 30, 2028, which gives the Spanish club significant leverage. When a player has two years left on his deal and the selling club doesn’t want to sell, the buyer’s negotiating position is severely weakened.
