Kraken became FIFA’s Official Crypto Exchange Supporter on June 9, 2026. Two days later, the World Cup kicked off across the US, Canada, and Mexico. That timing wasn’t accidental.
The partnership marks the first time a major FIFA tournament has carried an official cryptocurrency exchange sponsor. And with fan token trading activity surging around the tournament, digital assets are no longer just lurking on the sidelines of global sporting events.
The World Cup becomes crypto’s biggest stage
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, running from June 11 to July 19, is the largest edition of the tournament ever staged, spread across three countries.
Kraken’s sponsorship deal puts the exchange’s brand in front of billions of viewers worldwide. For context, the previous World Cup in Qatar drew an estimated cumulative audience north of 5 billion across the tournament.
Chainlink has also entered the picture, engaging in collaborations tied to fan engagement initiatives for the 2026 tournament.
Fan tokens heat up alongside the tournament
Brazil’s national team operates its own fan token, the Brazil National Football Team Fan Token (BFT), built on the Bitci Chain. The token gives holders access to voting rights on team-related decisions and digital collectibles.
Real Madrid forward Rodrygo suffered an ACL rupture and lateral meniscus tear during a match against Getafe on March 3. He has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and the World Cup itself. Despite the injury, Rodrygo traveled to the US to watch Brazil’s matches while continuing his rehabilitation.
What this means for crypto investors
FTX plastered its name on an NBA arena. Crypto.com bought naming rights to the Staples Center. Kraken’s FIFA deal differs in one important respect: the exchange has maintained its operations through multiple market cycles without the kind of implosion that felled FTX.
For investors eyeing fan tokens specifically, these assets are highly illiquid compared to major cryptocurrencies, extremely sentiment-driven, and tend to spike during tournaments before fading when the final whistle blows.
