José Mourinho considers selling Aurélien Tchouaméni to fund Mateus Fernandes move

1 hour ago 1

José Mourinho appears ready to reshape Real Madrid’s engine room this summer, with Aurélien Tchouaméni potentially heading for the exit and West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes emerging as the man Mourinho wants walking through the door.

The situation has a third party circling overhead. Manchester United are monitoring both midfielders, creating a transfer triangle that could define the summer window for three major clubs.

The Tchouaméni question

Tchouaméni’s future at the Bernabéu has looked increasingly uncertain as Mourinho plans what amounts to a midfield overhaul. The French international arrived at Real Madrid as one of the most coveted young midfielders in world football, having signed from Monaco in 2022, but the relationship between player and manager appears to have cooled to the point where a sale is genuinely on the table.

Why Fernandes is the target

The Portuguese midfielder at West Ham has been identified by Mourinho as his priority replacement should Tchouaméni depart.

West Ham are not making this easy. The London club values Fernandes at north of £80 million, with some reports suggesting their aspirations stretch as high as £100 million.

Manchester United’s shadow play

The most interesting wrinkle in this saga is Manchester United’s involvement. United are reportedly tracking both players, having already made contact with West Ham regarding Fernandes. They view the Portuguese midfielder as a younger option who could be the centerpiece of their own midfield reconstruction.

It’s worth noting that as of mid-June 2026, no confirmed bids or formal agreements have materialized for either player. Transfer rumors surrounding these players surfaced prominently between June 9–17, 2026, without any confirmed negotiations.

The key number to track is that £80-100 million valuation West Ham have placed on Fernandes. If Real Madrid can sell Tchouaméni for anything close to that figure, the swap essentially becomes revenue-neutral. The competition from Manchester United could also inflate prices across the board, as West Ham’s board will be well aware that United’s interest gives them a credible alternative buyer.
