Graham Potter’s emotional sideline celebration told the story. His Sweden squad opened their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on June 14 with a goal from 22-year-old Yasin Ayari, who found the net from outside the box against Tunisia to give Sweden a 1-0 lead in their Group F opener.
It was Ayari’s first senior international goal, arriving on the biggest stage imaginable.
A goal with layers
Ayari, a Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder, chose to represent Sweden over Tunisia at the international level. His father is Tunisian, which made this particular matchup a deeply personal affair.
Ayari had already proven his worth during qualification. He contributed an assist against Poland in March 2026 during the UEFA play-offs that secured Sweden’s spot in the tournament.
Potter’s journey to Sweden
Potter’s coaching career has taken him through some of English football’s most demanding roles. He managed Brighton, then Chelsea, then West Ham United before accepting the Sweden job in late 2025.
