Google warns of lower quality in revamped Europe search results

Google just told hundreds of millions of European users that their search experience is about to get worse. And the company wants everyone to know it’s not happy about it. On September 8, 2026, Google rolled out sweeping changes to how search results appear across European markets, a direct response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act and a €460 million ($534 million) fine the company received in July 2026 for self-preferencing violations. The company’s senior vice-president characterized the overhaul as the largest reduction in search quality in Google’s nearly three-decade history. What actually changed The new search format places a specialized third-party search engine at the top of results, flanked by two additional engines. Google has removed real-time pricing from service-related carousels for hotels and flights. Previously, a user searching for “flights to Barcelona” would see live prices directly in the results.
