German security authorities found two operational handguns hidden in a forest outside Berlin, and the investigation that followed has led them straight to a conclusion most European governments have been dreading: Russian intelligence services appear to be pre-positioning weapons on European soil for potential attacks. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, known by its German acronym BfV, confirmed the discovery and indicated that the concealed site was likely established by Russian operatives. In intelligence parlance, the setup is called a “dead letterbox,” a pre-arranged hiding spot where agents can retrieve materials without direct contact with handlers.
