Felix Nmecha is having the kind of summer that turns a solid Bundesliga midfielder into a transfer saga. The 25-year-old Borussia Dortmund player has been one of the most creative forces at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and Gary Neville, never one to throw around praise casually, has taken notice.
Speaking on ITV during the tournament, the former Manchester United defender and respected pundit suggested Nmecha could command an expensive transfer this summer.
Line-breaking passes and group stage dominance
He leads all players at the tournament with three assists that directly contributed to goals, a stat driven by his ability to execute line-breaking passes. Those contributions have been central to Germany’s group stage success, with the host nation securing victories against both Curaçao and Ivory Coast. Nmecha was instrumental in both results, dictating tempo from midfield and consistently finding teammates in dangerous positions.
Manchester United circling, and the Fernandes comparison
According to reports surrounding Neville’s comments, Manchester United is viewing Nmecha as a potentially budget-friendly alternative to West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes, who is reportedly valued between £80 million and £100 million.
Nmecha joined Borussia Dortmund in July 2023 on a five-year contract. That deal still has substantial time remaining, which gives Dortmund leverage.
