FIFA World Cup knockout phase kicks off June 28 as crypto partnerships reshape fan engagement

The 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout phase now has a schedule, and it’s a three-week sprint from June 28 through the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium.

The Round of 32 kicks off June 28 and runs through July 3. A record 48 teams are competing across 104 matches hosted in three countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Crypto gets its biggest sports stage yet

On June 9, Kraken was announced as the first Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of a FIFA World Cup, representing a deliberate pivot by FIFA toward courting crypto-native audiences, particularly in North America and Europe, where both the matches and the exchange’s user base are concentrated.

FIFA Collect, the organization’s digital collectibles platform, runs on what FIFA calls its own blockchain, built on Avalanche technology. The migration to this EVM-compatible setup has already attracted more than 85,000 addresses.

FIFA hasn’t issued its own token. The organization has instead opted for infrastructure-level involvement, building on existing blockchain rails rather than launching speculative assets.

Fan tokens and the Chiliz connection

Chiliz, the blockchain platform behind Socios.com and its portfolio of fan tokens for clubs and national teams, has generated over $700 million in ecosystem revenue.

Fan tokens let holders vote on minor club decisions, access exclusive content, and participate in gamified experiences. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar provided a preview: fan token activity surged around key matches and upsets, creating short-lived but intense trading windows.

Various unofficial meme tokens branded around “FWC” or “FIFA World Cup” are already trading on Solana and Ethereum. None of these carry FIFA’s endorsement.

What this means for investors

Chiliz and its CHZ token sit at an interesting inflection point. The $700 million revenue figure gives it fundamental backing that most altcoins lack. Fan token models are inherently tied to event cycles, with revenue spiking during tournaments and dipping between them.

Avalanche’s role as the underlying technology for FIFA Collect represents an infrastructure win. Over 85,000 addresses post-migration is modest by DeFi standards, but this is a consumer-facing platform targeting sports fans, not yield farmers.

The knockout phase schedule gives traders a concrete timeline: June 28 through July 3 for the Round of 32, building toward a July 19 final at MetLife Stadium.
