European banks and financial companies are on track to distribute €228 billion ($264.7 billion) to shareholders in 2026, a figure that would set an all-time record for the sector. The projection, from Bloomberg Intelligence analysts Laurent Douillet and Simbarashe Gumbo, represents a 13% jump from 2025 payouts. The EURO STOXX Banks index surged 80.3% in 2025, excluding dividends. Increased trading volumes and lending activity that surpassed pre-crisis levels drove earnings well beyond expectations. Net profits for the European banking sector are projected to hit $408 billion in 2026, a 9% year-on-year increase. Strong earnings in the second half of the year are expected to be the primary engine behind the record distributions.
