Europe bans health-threatening AI tech while US remains without federal regulation

The European Union officially banned eight categories of AI systems it considers too dangerous to exist. The United States, meanwhile, has done roughly nothing at the federal level to match that effort. The EU AI Act, which entered into force on August 1, 2024, started enforcing its “unacceptable risk” prohibitions on February 2, 2025. It’s the world’s first comprehensive AI regulatory framework, and it draws a bright line around practices like cognitive manipulation, social scoring, and emotion recognition in workplaces and schools.
