Erik ten Hag, the man who guided Ajax to a Champions League semifinal and then had a turbulent stint at Manchester United, is back in the conversation for one of the biggest jobs in Dutch football. The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has identified him as a candidate to replace Ronald Koeman as head coach of the Netherlands national team.
Ten Hag isn’t even coaching right now. He’s been working as FC Twente’s technical director since February 2026, a role that typically involves scouting, squad planning, and organizational strategy rather than picking starting lineups and drawing up set pieces. Yet the KNVB apparently sees enough in his track record to keep him on the shortlist.
A crowded shortlist with familiar names
Ten Hag isn’t the only name the KNVB is considering. Arne Slot and Ruud van Nistelrooy are also among the early candidates, according to reporting around the search process. The technical director overseeing the hunt is Nigel de Jong, the former Dutch international midfielder who now holds that role within the federation.
The technical director who might return to the touchline
Ten Hag was appointed as FC Twente’s technical director on January 6, 2026, with his tenure officially starting February 1. His contract runs through June 2028.
His career arc since leaving Manchester United has been anything but linear. He took over at Bayer Leverkusen starting May 26, 2025, with a contract through 2027. But that tenure ended remarkably quickly, within the same year.
When asked about the Netherlands job in a June 19, 2026 interview, ten Hag said he does not expect to receive a call for the role but remains open to coaching opportunities in the future.
Why ten Hag’s name still carries weight
His time at Ajax was transformational. The 2018-19 run, where Ajax knocked out Real Madrid and Juventus before falling agonizingly short against Tottenham, remains one of the most thrilling campaigns in modern Champions League history. Domestically, he dominated the Eredivisie.
His time at Manchester United saw him win the League Cup and the FA Cup, but day-to-day results were inconsistent and the relationship with certain players frayed publicly. It ended with a sacking. Then came the brief Leverkusen chapter, which added more questions than answers about his ability to adapt outside the Dutch football ecosystem.
The practical question is whether FC Twente would release him from a contract that runs until 2028. If the KNVB comes calling and ten Hag wants the job, some kind of arrangement with Twente would need to be worked out.
