DOE declares grid emergency amid heat wave across 13 states

Photo: Tom Fisk / Pexels An unseasonably warm weather pattern has led to a grid emergency declaration across 13 states by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The heat wave has intensified power demand at a time when many power plants are offline for scheduled fall maintenance. The DOE’s emergency order allows for the use of backup power sources and the temporary relaxation of environmental regulations to ensure grid stability. This situation affects PJM Interconnection, which manages the electricity supply for approximately 67 million people, highlighting the challenges faced by grid operators under extreme weather conditions. The emergency order has raised concerns about energy reliability, particularly in Texas, where energy demand is high, and grid stability is a persistent issue. Market pricing suggests that participants view this development as potentially increasing the likelihood of Texas enacting a moratorium on new data centers. This is reflected in the observed odds movement in markets focused on the possibility of Texas imposing such a moratorium by the end of 2026. Key Takeaways Recent developments suggest a heightened focus on energy reliability, with the grid emergen...
