DeepMind loses sole non-US executive overseeing AI development as Hassabis steps back

For the first time in Google DeepMind’s history, no one outside the United States oversees the company’s AI development. Demis Hassabis, the London-based co-founder who built DeepMind into one of the world’s most influential AI labs, stepped down from daily operations on August 5, 2026, marking the end of an era where a non-American executive held the reins of a major US tech company’s AI ambitions. Hassabis isn’t disappearing entirely. He’ll serve as chair of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet. But the operational power now sits with Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current CTO who steps into the role of senior vice-president, reporting directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Jeff Dean, one of Google’s most legendary engineers, is also departing. He’s taking colleagues Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le with him to launch Discover Loop, an independent AI startup. Google is backing the venture with investment and a cloud partnership. Alphabet’s stock responded about as well as you’d expect. Shares dropped approximately 4% following the August 5 announcement.
