Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong promotes agentic finance as Base surpasses 100M AI payments

Brian Armstrong has a thesis, and it goes something like this: AI agents need money, banks won’t give them accounts, so crypto wins by default. The Coinbase CEO has been publicly championing what he calls “agentic finance,” a framework where autonomous AI systems manage crypto wallets, execute transactions, and participate in commerce without human intervention. The numbers backing the argument are getting hard to ignore. Coinbase’s x402 payment protocol, which launched in May 2025, has already surpassed 100 million machine-to-machine transactions in roughly nine months.
