Coinbase is constructing what it calls “the financial account for AI,” a dedicated infrastructure layer that lets autonomous agents trade, borrow, lend, and make payments without a human clicking buttons. CEO Brian Armstrong laid out the vision on September 9, 2026: programmable money meets programmable intelligence, and Coinbase wants to sit at the intersection. The product, branded Coinbase for Agents, officially launched between June 11 and June 16, 2026. It started with crypto and derivatives trading for AI agents, with equities, ETFs, and prediction markets queued up as future additions. By September, those equity and ETF capabilities went live, alongside full support for x402, a micropayment protocol that lets machines pay machines in USDC without subscriptions or API keys.
