Chatbot companies face a wave of lawsuits over AI-linked violence and teen mental health crises

A wave of lawsuits targeting Character.AI, OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft is moving through the legal system, with plaintiffs arguing that these companies built products with fundamental safety failures. At least 58 chatbot-related lawsuits had emerged by early 2026, alongside 78 related state legislative bills. What the lawsuits actually claim Character.AI sits at the center of the most serious allegations. At least two teenage suicides have been linked to interactions with its chatbots, and multiple families have filed wrongful-death claims. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a lawsuit against the company around June 1, 2026, focusing on the mental health dangers posed by ChatGPT.
