The Commodity Futures Trading Commission published its latest Commitments of Traders data on August 28, covering open interest and trader positioning through August 25. The report spans contracts on the CME, ICE, and NYMEX, touching everything from grain and energy futures to currencies and, notably, Bitcoin. What the COT report actually tells us The report divides traders into buckets. Commercial traders are typically the producers and consumers who use futures to hedge real-world business risk. Non-commercial traders are the speculators: hedge funds, commodity trading advisors, and other managed-money players whose primary goal is profit, not risk management. This week’s data arrives on the heels of the prior release on August 21, which covered positions from August 18.
