Bitcoin’s Great Consensus Cleanup soft fork targets legacy vulnerabilities

BIP-54 aims to patch four flaws in Bitcoin's consensus rules, and its backers think it could be the network's next soft fork Bitcoin’s next big protocol upgrade may not be a flashy one. The leading candidate is a cleanup job: a proposal to fix four flaws in the network’s consensus rules that have been sitting there since the protocol launched in 2009. The proposal is formally known as BIP-54, or the Great Consensus Cleanup. Four old bugs, one soft fork A soft fork is a backward-compatible rule change. It tightens what the network accepts without forcing everyone onto a new chain. BIP-54 targets four specific weaknesses. The first is a time-warp exploit in Bitcoin’s difficulty adjustment algorithm. That algorithm is the thermostat that keeps block production steady as mining power rises and falls. A time-warp attack involves manipulating timestamps to trick that thermostat. Put simply, a bad actor could game the clock to make mining artificially easier. The second fix addresses so-called “poison” blocks. These are blocks built with legacy scripts that take an unusually long time to validate. That slowness can become a denial-of-service vector among miners, clogging up the work of ve...
