Bitcoin ETFs enter a new phase as IBIT and MSBT make swapping holdings for shares easier than ever

The friction between holding actual Bitcoin and owning a regulated financial product that tracks it is shrinking fast. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has now processed more than $5 billion in in-kind conversions, where investors exchange real Bitcoin for ETF shares, while Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) is pulling in capital at a pace that suggests Wall Street’s biggest names see this market as worth fighting over. The in-kind advantage SEC policy updates in mid-2025 opened the door for direct Bitcoin-to-ETF swaps in spot Bitcoin ETFs. Before that change, authorized participants had to use cash as the intermediary, which created taxable events for large holders. Now, investors can transfer Bitcoin directly into the fund and receive ETF shares in return, sidestepping capital gains triggers that would have been unavoidable under the old rules. BlackRock leaned into this hard. In July 2026, the firm slashed IBIT’s minimum threshold for in-kind Bitcoin-to-ETF swaps from $25 million down to $1 million.
