Anthropic faces class action over misleading Claude Max pricing

When you pay $200 a month for something labeled “20x more usage,” you’d reasonably expect to get, well, 20 times more usage. One Anthropic subscriber ran the math and came up short. Now he’s suing. A proposed class-action lawsuit was filed on June 14 in the US District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic PBC. Plaintiff Karl Kahn alleges the company systematically misled subscribers about the actual usage limits of its Claude Max subscription tiers, specifically the Max 5x and Max 20x plans. The gap between the label and the product The core of the complaint is straightforward: Anthropic’s naming conventions imply a multiplier over the standard Pro plan, which costs between $17 and $20 per month. Max 5x should deliver five times the Pro plan’s usage. Max 20x should deliver twenty times. According to Kahn’s filing, the reality falls well short of those numbers. The Max 5x plan allegedly delivers roughly 3.5 times the Pro plan’s usage. The Max 20x plan reportedly lands somewhere between 6 and 8 times, not 20.
