Anthropic adopts Google’s SynthID-Text watermarking for all Claude models

Starting August 2, 2026, every new Claude model ships with a hidden statistical fingerprint baked into its outputs. Anthropic has integrated Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text watermarking technology, making its AI-generated text detectable by anyone holding the right cryptographic key. The decision aligns Anthropic with the EU AI Act’s Article 50(2) Code of Practice, which requires AI platforms to make their outputs identifiable. But the watermarking won’t be limited to European users. It applies globally, across every Claude deployment. How invisible ink works in 2026 SynthID-Text operates at the token-selection layer of a language model, which is where the AI decides which word comes next. When a model generates text, it typically ranks candidate words by probability and picks from the top options with some randomness mixed in. The watermark subtly biases that randomness using a secret key. Think of it like a weighted coin flip that only the house can detect. If “cloudy” and “overcast” are both strong candidates for the next word, the watermark might nudge the model toward “overcast” in a pattern that’s statistically invisible to a human reader but unmistakable to someone running th...
