Ajax targets loan signing of Barcelona’s Jofre amid left-back concerns

2 hours ago 1

Ajax Amsterdam has set its sights on Jofre Torrents, a 19-year-old left-back from FC Barcelona’s academy system, as the Dutch giants look to shore up a position that has been a persistent headache. The potential loan move would send one of La Masia’s more promising defensive prospects to the Eredivisie for the kind of regular first-team minutes that Barcelona simply cannot guarantee right now.

Torrents, born on January 28, 2007, has made just 3 appearances for Barcelona’s senior squad. His debut came in August 2025 under coach Hansi Flick during a LaLiga match against Mallorca.

What Ajax gets, and what Barcelona gives up (temporarily)

Ajax’s interest in Torrents is rooted in a straightforward squad-building need. The club wants to strengthen its left-back options heading into the new season, and a loan deal for a Barcelona academy product checks multiple boxes: youth, technical quality, and zero permanent transfer fee.

For Barcelona, the calculus is equally simple. Torrents signed a contract extension in May 2025 that runs through June 2028, meaning the club has him locked down for the foreseeable future. His release clause sits somewhere between €400 million and €800 million, in line with the protective figures Barcelona routinely slaps on its La Masia graduates.

Barcelona has signaled a willingness to loan the player during this summer’s transfer window. Torrents currently plays for FC Barcelona Atlètic, the club’s reserve side, where the presence of established first-team left-back Alejandro Balde limits his path to regular minutes. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, is listed at €1 million.

What this means for Torrents’ career trajectory

Torrents is at a critical juncture. At 19, standing 1.85 meters tall, he is old enough to handle senior football but young enough that a wasted season could set him back significantly. A loan to Ajax would put him in a system that values possession-based football, similar to what he’s been taught at La Masia, while exposing him to a different tactical culture.

No official announcement has been made regarding the deal as of mid-June 2026. But with Barcelona open to the move and Ajax actively seeking reinforcements at left-back, the pieces are in place for a deal that makes strategic sense for all parties involved.
