Everyone wants AI computing power right now. Not everyone can get it. A coalition has launched the National Compute Grid, an initiative designed to pool AI computing capacity and ease the supply shortages that have plagued the industry, Axios reported. What the grid is trying to fix The core idea is simple: combine computing resources so more people can tap them. The goal is to relieve the scarcity that has made training and running AI models a game for the well-funded. The people hit hardest by shortages tend to be researchers and startups. Large tech firms can sign massive capacity deals. A university lab or a five-person startup usually cannot. It is worth separating this effort from another group with a similar-sounding name. The AI Infrastructure Coalition (AIIC) was established in the US on November 19, 2025, with members including Google, Microsoft, and Andreessen Horowitz. Its work centers on policy advocacy around data centers, energy, and semiconductors, rather than directly operating a compute grid.
