Africa’s Bitcoin-only ecosystem now has an official headcount: 180 verified projects spread across 23 countries. That figure comes from the Live African Bitcoin Directory, maintained by the African Bitcoiners community. As of October 6-7, 2026, it reflects a cleanup as much as it reflects growth. The directory had peaked at 189 projects in Q3 2026. Then the curators did something most growth charts never do: they went back and checked who was still around. A record quarter, then a spring cleaning First, the expansion. The directory’s count rose from 167 to 189 projects, an increase of 22 entries and a 13.2% jump. Then came the audit. African Bitcoiners removed 11 listings that were inactive or no longer met the directory’s standards, and added 2 new projects. The growth was not evenly distributed across categories. Community projects grew 31% in Q3 2026 compared with the previous quarter, while businesses rose a more modest 3.7%. How the map got bigger The directory has been maintained continuously since early 2024. Back in Q1 2024, it covered 15 countries, mostly with educational and business initiatives.
