Absa becomes first African bank to offer digital-asset custody

Absa Group Ltd. has become the first bank in Africa to offer institutional-grade digital-asset custody. On September 21, 2026, its Corporate and Investment Banking division launched the Absa Digital Asset Custody platform in South Africa. What Absa is actually offering Custody is the vault side of finance. A custodian holds assets for clients, keeps them safe, keeps the records, and moves them when instructed. For digital assets, that means safeguarding the cryptographic credentials that control the coins. Absa’s platform covers safekeeping, administration and transfers, all inside a regulated banking environment. The service is built for institutions only. Target clients include asset managers, non-bank financial institutions, corporates and treasury functions. Retail customers are explicitly excluded. At launch, the platform supports four categories of assets: Bitcoin (BTC) Ether (ETH) Assets on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) USD Coin (USDC) According to the platform, Bitcoin makes up the largest share of assets under custody.
